A Good Year filming locations: a day in the film’s Provence

The château and vines of La Siroque, the estate Max inherits, are Château La Canorgue, an organic, family-run wine estate on the edge of Bonnieux. The honey-coloured house, the terrace and the pool will be instantly familiar. It is a working estate, so please respect the family’s privacy, but you can taste and buy the wines; our wine tasting guide has the details.

Nearby, Château Les Eydins stood in for the farmhouse of Duflot, the vineyard manager. Both are on the quiet road that runs down from Bonnieux towards the Roman Pont Julien.

Fanny Chenal, played by Marion Cotillard, runs the café on the main square of Gordes: in real life, Le Renaissance, facing the château. Sit on the terrace with a coffee and the scene comes straight back. The film also follows Max’s car around the hilltop village. Gordes has its market on Tuesday mornings; go early, before the coaches.

The most romantic scene in the film, Max and Fanny’s candlelit dinner with lights strung through the trees and a film projected over the water, was shot at the Place de l’Étang in Cucuron, a large pool framed by tall plane trees. A Good Year was adapted from the 2004 novel by Peter Mayle, whose A Year in Provence made the Luberon famous around the world. Mayle lived near Ménerbes, a few minutes from the villa, and his friend, the director Ridley Scott, owns a wine estate at Oppède. It is a very local film.
